17 easy ways to be creative this weekend18 May 2018 - inspiration
When it comes to weekends, many of us want to do something fun and creative but don’t have the time, energy or money to say, finish writing a book or buy a new camera. But that’s okay. Creativity is just about being curious and seeing things in new ways. In other words, the potential for creativity is everywhere—even in simple and everyday things. If you’re looking for something creative and relaxing to do this weekend, here are 17 easy ways you can keep your creative juices going.
1. Do an easy DIY project
This can be as simple as assembling your IKEA furniture (challenge: don’t refer to the instructions!) or trying out an IKEA hack. You get to flex your creative muscles and get something practical done at the same time.
2. Go to a painting café
Eat scones and paint at the same time—you don’t have to be a painter to enjoy this! If you’re in Singapore, try Arteastiq.
3. Absorb inspiration and knowledge
• Netflix documentaries: Abstract (about the art of design) and Jiro Dreams of Sushi (about a legendary sushi master’s skills)
• YouTube channels: Every Frame A Painting and Buzzfeed Nifty
• Pinterest is of course your #1 friend for inspiration
4. Use word magnets
Explore a new place or go somewhere you haven’t been to in a long time. Don’t bother about taking “nice” photos or having good equipment—the best camera is the one that’s in your hands.
6. Dress for a theme
Get your friends to dress for a theme when you go out, or simply put together an outfit that isn’t in your comfort zone. That’s what weekends are for.
7. Go somewhere you’ve never been
Or do something you’ve never done.
8. Have creative sessions
Socialise and get creative at the same time. If you like writing, have writing sessions with friends! You get to brainstorm, motivate and learn from each other.
9. Swap skills
Choose a friend and find something that each of you want to learn from each other.
10. Organise or declutter
Repurpose or customise furniture, redecorate your room, or find innovative ways to keep things organised.
11. Cook something new without a recipe
Or change up the ingredients you usually use.
12. Change up your weekend routine
Use a different route, go to a new breakfast place, change up your weekend make-up, overhaul your morning routine…
13. Take a class
There are so many options out there: candle making, baking, pottery, jewellery making… YouTube is also a treasure trove of free classes on any topic.
14. Go to nature
Daydream and let your ideas flow.
15. Do something you like doing differently
If you like posting photos on Instagram, edit your photos differently, take totally different kinds of photos, or find a different location to take your photos.
Doodle, brainstorm, organise, reflect… Journaling is an easy way to get creative without judgement.
17. Create a mood board for the week/month
Gather pictures, colours, quotes, tips etc. that make you feel excited. Use them to inspire the way you work, think, create and live.
